Arvind Bhat wins Scottish Open

BANGALORE, NOV. 29. India No. 2, Arvind Bhat won the men's singles title in the Bank of Scotland international (Scottish Open) badminton championship at Glasgow on Sunday, according to information reaching here. Bhat is the second Indian to win the Scottish Open following P. Gopi Chand's success in 1999.

Bhat, a trainee of Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, defeated the third seed, Marc Zwiebler of Germany 15-8,15-7 in the final.

Anup Sridhar lost to Bhat 15-9,12-15,13-15 in the semifinals after beating the second seed, George Rimarcdi of Sweden. National champion Chetan Anand lost to Marc Zwiebler in the quarterfinals.

In women's singles, Trupti Murgunde, who beat the top seed Petra Overzier of Germany at 9-11, 11-4, 11-1 in the quarterfinals, lost to Jill Pittard of England 11-6,11-1 in the semifinals.

In men's doubles, India's Sanve Thomas and Rupesh Kumar lost in the semifinals to Canadian duo, Mike Beres and William Milroy13-15, 15-12, 8-15.

Jwala Gutta and Shruthi Kurien lost to the ultimate winner, Kamila Augustyn and Nadiezda Kostiucyzk of Poland, in the semifinals.
