New IT policy by January 1

HYDERABAD, NOV. 29. The State Government is planning to announce the new Information Technology (IT) policy by January 1, according to J.C. Mohanty, Principal Secretary, Information Technology.

A major change in the policy will be the decision to do away with linking job creation to land allotment. Under the existing policy, the beneficiary company has to assure creation of a certain number of jobs per acre. The allottee has then to only pay for land development charges.

Dr. Mohanty indicated that this would no longer be mandatory, but another form of `employment-linked incentive will be offered.'

He was interacting with the media after the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, announced that an IT company -- MindTree Consulting-- founded by the past president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), would start operations in the State capital.

Industry consulted

He said the Government had at least 10 sessions of discussions with the IT industry, and their opinion was reflected in the policy. He said the policy was undergoing changes, and the Government was still engaged in `refining' it. An announcement could be expected in a month's time.

He said the Jawahar Knowledge Centre would be inaugurated this week. It would help engineering graduates make their skills industry-relevant.
