KOLKATA, NOV. 29. The Trinamool Congress chief, Mamata Banerjee, said today that the bandh called by her party on December 3 should be considered a "shutdown." "We are calling it [bandh] a shutdown to register our protest against the Communists' non-functioning Government," she said. Sources in the Trinamool said that Ms. Banerjee coined the euphemism in view of a petition filed in the Calcutta High Court opposing the bandh. The party has so far not received any notice from the court. Ms. Banerjee will launch a series of programmes in the next few days to mobilise support for the 12-hour strike. She will begin her campaign at a rally in Jadavpur, the Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's constituency. The Bengal Congress has described the bandh as "politically motivated." The Trinamool had no reason to go ahead with it as the UPA Government at the Centre had already initiated steps to lower the fuel prices, it said.
