Apex Court nod for engineering colleges to fill vacant seats

NEW DELHI, NOV. 29. The Supreme Court on Monday permitted private engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to fill vacant seats within one week on the basis of marks obtained by students in the higher secondary examination. In Tamil Nadu alone there are over 25,000 vacant seats.

A Bench of Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice P.P. Naolekar passed the order on a batch of petitions filed by the Tamil Nadu Self-financing Engineering Colleges Association and others seeking a direction to permit the colleges to fill seats on the basis of marks obtained by students in the qualifying examination, irrespective of whether they had taken the entrance tests conducted by the State or by the association of colleges.

The TNSFECA submitted that in 2003-2004, over 22,000 seats remained vacant in view of the admission norms of the State Government and this year it was over 25,000 seats. There would be financial repercussions for a period of four years as a result of this.

The petitioners cited an earlier order passed by a Bench headed by Mr. Justice Sabharwal permitting private engineering colleges to admit students on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

20,000 seats vacant

Our Hyderabad Staff Reporter adds: Even though there are close to 20,000 seats lying vacant in the engineering colleges in the State, the Supreme Court order may not fill more than a few hundred of them, according to informed sources in the Government.

Most students desirous of an engineering degree had already appeared for EAMCET and had taken admission to various colleges. It would be difficult to fill any significant number of the vacant seats at this late stage in the academic year, they pointed out.
