Jana Reddy denies supporting covert

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV. 29. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, on Monday denied allegations that the police conspired against Maoists by supporting an alleged covert Laxman, presently held captive by Adivasi Liberation Tigers (ALT) in Warangal district. The police had no connections with Laxman, the Minister asserted.

"Duty of the police is to investigate cases and not to conspire against someone," the Minister reacted when his attention was drawn to the charges levelled by Maoists. Mr. Reddy was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the new building of the Panjagutta police station.

The Home Minister also offered to order a formal inquiry into the exchange of fire in Karimnagar and opening of fire at a villager by naxalites in Mahabubngar district. Apart from investigation by the police, the ceasefire monitoring committee would also probe into the circumstances that led to the exchange of fire, he said.

However, he made it clear that the two incidents would have no impact on the ongoing peace talks between the Government and Maoists. The Minister evaded a reply when asked if the non-bailable sections in the criminal case registered in connection with the Saidabad rioting were lifted. Small cases were being lifted across the State depending on the situation, he said.
