Violin recital

NEW DELHI NOV. 29. Violin maestro L. Subramaniam enthralled classical music lovers with his recital at Nehru Park here this past Sunday as part of the New Delhi Municipal Council's ongoing "Music In The Park Evening Ragas" series.

Dr. Subramaniam started the concert with "Ganesh Stuti" followed by various evening ragas. Sitar maestro Pandit Debu Chaudhuri, shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan and vocalist Shubha Mudgal have also given performances under this series. The next concert will be held on December 5 in which flautist Hari Prasad Chaurasiya will perform.

The underlying purpose behind organising the event is to take Indian art and culture to the general public where they too can participate.

German scholar honoured

NEW DELHI NOV. 29. Noted jurist L.M. Singhvi presented the 9th Acharya Hemchandra Suri Award to German scholar Willem Bollee for his lifelong contribution to the study of Prakrit language at India International Centre here this past Sunday.

The ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Heimo Richer, presided over the function in which prominent Hindi writer, Namvar Singh, was also present. Dr. Singhvi remembered the contribution of Germans in the study of spirituality and highlighted the importance of spirituality in the context of life's philosophy.

Bank helps women groups

NEW DELHI NOV.29. Indian Bank has advanced over Rs. 400 crores as loans to 61,190 self-help women's groups all over the country to make women independent and economically self-reliant.

According to a press release from the Bank, a total of 788,728 people have benefited so far under the scheme, which started in 1989. Several below-poverty-line families have become self-reliant and some of them had even become entrepreneurs. At the recent India International Trade Fair in the Capital, several families who had become economically sound had put up 35 stalls and goods worth over Rs. 25 lakhs were sold at the fair. The Chairman of the Bank, M.P.N. Rao, visited these stalls and assured the self-help groups that the bank would continue to extend financial assistance to them in all their ventures.

Assembly on Palestine

NEW DELHI NOV. 29. On the occasion of "International Day Of Solidarity With Palestine", the Dhaula Kuan branch of Springdales School along with students of Bluebells, Manavsthali and Springdales School, Pusa Road, today organised a special assembly at its premises here. In his speech, the ambassador of Palestine, Osama Musa -- who was the guest of honour - questioned the conscience of the world and the role of the United Nations for the Palestinian cause. He thanked the Indian people and students of Springdales, Bluebells and Manavsthali for supporting his country's liberation moment. While special messages of condolence were read out by the League of Arab States Mission and the U.N. Information Centre representatives, the students stressed the need for the Palestinian children to be brought up in a free country.

The ambassador of Somalia, J.C. Ibanez, and the Cuban ambassador, Hatem, were also present on the occasion.
