Passport racket busted

NEW DELHI, NOV. 29. The Indira Gandhi International Airport police have smashed a racket in providing passports to people using fraudulent means. One person has been arrested in this connection.

According to the police, the immigration authorities detained Jitender Singh from Gurdaspur in Punjab when he was about to board an Aeroflot flight to Moscow on November 29. He was travelling on a passport issued in the name of one Rohit Kumar, a resident of Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi.

During interrogation, Jitender told the police that he had got his passport from two agents, Dilbagh Singh and Amanjit Singh. Dilbagh had already been arrested in another case. Following investigations, Amanjit was also arrested. The police said Amanjit had also provided fake visa to the United Kingdom to Hardev Singh, also from Gurdaspur. Hardev had been deported from Tashkent on May 26.

Amanjit, in connivance with passport officials, used to procure additional passport booklets which used to be issued in the name of one person. Subsequently, they used to replace the photograph of the original applicant with that of their client.

The accused also helped other agents in getting visa for different European countries on the pretext of sending the clients for business purpose. He had also floated a garment export firm, M/S Link International, at Connaught Place in New Delhi, and used to show his clients as going on business visits to foreign countries on behalf of his company.

Further investigations in the case are on.
