BJP sees bid to foil bandh

HYDERABAD, NOV.29. The BJP national secretary, Bandaru Dattatreya, today accused the Government of trying to foil the bandh called by the party on Tuesday and warned that it would be responsible for any untoward incident.

He told a press conference here that the bandh was called to pressure the Government to prevent suicide by farmers, and starvation deaths of weavers.

It was also to protest against the Government's "failure" to prevent sale of spurious seed/pesticides, to ensure remunerative prices and loans to farmers and to control prices of essential commodities.

He charged the Government with failure to check suicide by distressed farmers.

Earlier, Mr. Dattatreya addressed a meeting at Khairatabad in the city.

Meanwhile, the city unit of the party, giving an urban dimension to the bandh, alleged that the Government's "inaction" on hike in fuel and gas prices had hit the common man hard.

The city unit president, Venkatramani, Kishan Reddy (MLA), the Deputy Mayor, Subash Chanderji, and others told a press conference that the failure of the `Deepam' scheme and closure of toddy shops had affected many.

Mr. Venkatramani flayed the Government for not heeding to the pleas of toddy tappers to allow running of toddy shops within city limits. He said an estimated 10,000 families had been affected by the Government's decision.
