Mayoral poll exposes rift in Congress

BANGALORE, NOV. 29. The mayoral elections have reportedly led to a rift between two groups of Congress leaders.

There was a keen tussle for the party nomination between two candidates who were supported by two groups of leaders — one led by B.K. Hariprasad, MP, and the other by the Jayanagar MLA and Bangalore City District Congress Committee (BCDCC) President, Ramalinga Reddy, and the Malleswaram MLA, M.R. Sitaram. While Mr. Reddy's group supported the HMT corporator, R. Narayanswamy, Mr. Hariprasad's group made efforts to ensure the victory of the Malleswaram corporator, B. Muniraju.

Highly placed sources in the Congress told The Hindu the election of Mr. Narayanswamy as Mayor was a "prestige issue" for the group which was supporting him. The sources said Mr. Narayanswamy secured 50 votes in the secret ballot. Mr. Muniraju got 14 votes, K.B. Mohan and Vasanthkumari, who were also contenders to the post, polled one vote each.

The ballot box was opened in the presence of presspersons and elected representatives on Monday morning.
