HYDERABAD, NOV. 30. The Telugu Desam Party has said it is ready for a debate in the Assembly on the development of the irrigation sector during TDP rule in comparison to the progress achieved when the Congress was in power. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the TD general secretary, K. Srihari, said the Congress was criticising the previous Government's performance in the irrigation sector merely to thwart the TD's moves to corner the Government. "It is afraid that that we will put the Government on the mat by exposing irregularities in irrigation tenders," he said. Mr. Srihari said during the nine-year TD rule additional ayacut of 12.50 lakh acres had been developed by spending Rs. 10,500 crores. In comparison, the Congress Government spent Rs. 2,004 crores during 1989-94. He said the TD Government had completed Sriramsagar stage - I, Srisailam right bank canal, Jurala, A. Madhava Reddy lift irrigation scheme and Vamsadhara stage - I besides 13 medium irrigation projects.
YSR criticised
He said the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had no right to accuse the TD of neglecting irrigation projects. He said the Alaganur balancing reservoir, K.C.canal modernisation works, Sunkesula barrage and Telugu Ganga project A and B bund in Cuddapah district, which he recently dedicated to the nation, were completed by the TD Government. He questioned whether the Congress Government would be able to spend Rs. 4,200 crores earmarked for irrigation during 2004-2005.
