Helmet rule upheld
By Our Legal Correspondent
HYDERABAD,
NOV. 30.
A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, comprising the Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, and the Judge, G. Rohini, today refused to interfere with the orders of the Government, making wearing of helmets compulsory for drivers of two-wheelers in the twin cities. The Bench was closing the writ petition filed by Raghunandan, who claimed that he had filed the petition in public interest. The petitioner contended that helmets of good quality were not available and that the Government cannot insist on wearing helmets.
The court was informed by the Government pleader in an affidavit that manufacturers of quality helmets had been contacted, a mela was held. The court was further informed that the helmet would be compulsory from 1-1-2005 and until then those drivers who did not wear helmet would be asked to attend counselling.
