Pre-Army recruitment

ADILABAD: Selections for pre-Army recruitment training in the district will be made at Nirmal on December 4 followed by Mancherial on December 6.

The selections will be held at Utnoor on December 7 and at Adilabad on December 8. Over 200 youngsters will be selected for the one-month training programme here.

The District Youth Welfare Officer, Sailoo, told reporters here on Tuesday that selected candidates would be provided free accommodation.

Beneficiaries for Yuva Shakti

ADILABAD: The District Youth Welfare Officer, Sailoo, has urged Mandal Parishad Development Officers to furnish the list of selected persons for financial aid under the Rajiv Yuva Shakti by December 8.

He said on Tuesday that this would help in completion of the process of identification of all 1,590 beneficiaries by December 15.

TDP leader assails YSR

ADILABAD: The newly-appointed spokesman of the Telugu Desam Party and former Union Minister, S. Venugopalachary, on Tuesday charged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy, with promoting contractors who have connections with the Congress.

He alleged that the nine short-listed contracting firms for the medium irrigation projects had links with Congressmen. He charged the Government with increasing the estimates of the projects with ulterior motives.

Loan disbursal for SHGs

ADILABAD: State Bank of Hyderabad Adilabad main branch on Tuesday organised the credit delivery programme to disburse loans to self-help groups (SHGs) and loans under the VAMBAY and the Andhra Pradesh State Minorities Finance Corporation (APSMFC).

In all, 76 SHGs were given financial aid amounting to Rs. 46 lakhs, 14 SHGs were given Rs. 4.32 crores under the VAMBAY and 18 SHGs of minority women were given Rs. 5.20 lakhs under the schemes of APSMFC.

C. Ramchander Reddy, MLA, and the district Collector, J. Sudha Rani, urged women to make use of various Government schemes. The bank Chief Manager, Raja Shekhar Prasad, was present.

Bank's loan campaign

WARANGAL: The Andhra Bank General Manager, A. Muralidhar, distributed cheques for Rs. 2.5 crores as loans to 92 customers here on Tuesday.

Participating as chief guest at the concluding function of two-day `Mega campaign' organised by the zonal office at Town Hall, he said over 300 consent letters sanctioning loans for Rs.5.80 crores were issued by the bank during the exhibition.

Archery contests ends

VARNI: The two-day 50th State-level inter-school archery competitions concluded at Samskar Sports Stadium here on Tuesday.

In the under-14 girls category, Ch. Anitha of Warangal bagged the overall championship and in under-17 girls, Prasanthi of Warangal emerged champion.

In under-14 boys category, Ch. Visist Reddy of Hyderabad secured the overall championship while in under-17, Bhushan Rao from Ranga Reddy district was adjudged the best archer.

Forty archers -- both girls and boys - have been selected to participate in the all-India school national archery championship to be held at Patiyala in Punjab from December 18 to 23.

The Banswada MLA, Bajireddy Govardhan, presented prizes and trophies to winners and runners-up.

DJS calls bandh

on December 6

Hyderabad: The Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadat (DJS) has given a statewide bandh call on December 6, the 12th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition. The bandh will not be enforced but observed on a voluntary basis, according to the DJS president, Shaikh Mahboob Ali.

He told presspersons here on Tuesday that a rally would be taken out from DBR Mills to Indira Park between 3 p.m and 5 p.m. on the day.

Mr. Ali urged all people in general and Muslims in particular to extend support to the bandh.

TDP leader refutes charge

HYDERABAD: The TDP spokesperson, N. Rajakumari, has denied the charges that she defaulted rent payment for the house in new Assembly quarters.

She told reporters here on Tuesday that she paid all the rental dues for her official residence. She requested the Speaker to adjust her pension she receives towards the rent. She took exception to some Congress leaders questioning her stature to criticise the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Principal Secretary

HYDERABAD: P. Ramakanth Reddy, Officer on Special Duty, Finance Department, on Tuesday posted as Principal Secretary in place of V. S. Sampath, who has been relieved from the State IAS cadre following his deputation to the Centre, according to an official release.

Two hacked to death

KURNOOL: Two persons were hacked to death in Adoni town of Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, three brothers, working as stone cutters at Baichigeri near Adoni came to the town to collect payment from those whom they supplied stone chips, were attacked by the rival gang.

The gang, numbering eight persons, attacked Yakob and his brother, Israel alias Nallamma, with knives and sickles and killed them on the spot. The gang, believed to have hailed from Gudekal near Yemmiganur, committed the crime to settle old scores. One of the three brothers, Anand, however, escaped.

Fruit plants damaged

ANANTAPUR: Personal enmity between two farmers in Putlur mandal led to chopping of more than 100 fruit plants and damaging of two tubewells belonging to one of them.

According to the police, Vamshavardhan Reddy and Yellappa of Kandigopula village had a dispute over a tubewell for the last few years. The enmity between the two was alleged to have prompted Yellappa to chop 97 amla plants and 10 sweetlime plants of one-year old belonging to the brother-in-law of Vamshavaradhan Reddy, B. Siva Reddy of Chintakunta village.

Two killed in road mishap

GUNTUR: Two persons died and 21 others sustained injuries when the bus in which they were travelling jumped railing of a Road Over Bridge in Rompicherla mandal of Guntur district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The driver of the Kandukuru - Hyderabad bus lost control while trying to avoid a collision with a lorry, hit the railings of the road over bridge and fell on the old approach road.

The dead were identified as Chanchaiah, 35, hailing from Ongole, and a girl, S. Bhavana, hailing from Jaladanki in Nellore district.

All the injured were shifted to the Narsaraopet Government hospital.

MPLADS: pat for State

HYDERABAD: The Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, on Tuesday hailed the effective implementation of the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) in the State.

Launching in Delhi a special software for monitoring MPLADS, he interacted with the Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, through a video conference. He said Rs.120 crores was allotted to 60 MPs from the State every year and that it was among the top three States in the implementation of the scheme.

The Speaker said about 89 per cent of the funds allotted to the Lok Sabha members and 82 per cent of those set apart for Elders had been utilised.

The software, developed by the Programme Implementation Ministry, will enable people to know the progress of works under MPLADS. They could log on to www.mplads.nic.in, according to an official release.

Open hearing of blast probe

Srikakulam: The first open hearing of the magisterial inquiry into the cracker blast at Chinna Bazar on September 4, which had claimed 15 lives, will be held at the MRO office here on December 6.

The District Revenue Officer, Seetaramayya, holding the additional charge of Joint Collector, will conduct the inquiry.

Meanwhile, S. Sundara Rao, a constable who was injured and sent to Visakhapatnam for treatment, died later taking the blast toll to 15.

Ends life at police station

KURNOOL: A person, identified as Rajasekhar, allegedly committed suicide on the premises of the police station at Nandikotkur in Kurnool district on Monday.

According to reports, Rajasekhar was handed over to the police by a few farmers whom his father had reportedly defaulted.

Rajasekhar, a construction worker, was believed to have been hurt by it and committed suicide by consuming poison.

Two weavers drowned

CUDDAPAH: Two handloom weavers, both brothers, were drowned in the Pennar at Siddhavatam last evening.

The weavers -- Sadhu Chinna Yanadi (17) and Sadhu Venkataramana (19) of Kotha Madhavaram in Vontimitta mandal -- visited the Siddhavatam fort and Sivalayam. They went for a swim and disappeared, while their family members took bath in the river. Later, their bodies were found.

Cotton destroyed in fire

ADILABAD: Fire broke out in the Sai Bab ginning mill situated on the Rampur road on Tuesday destroying about 14,000 quintals of cotton.

Fire brigade personnel from Adilabad, Ichoda and Utnoor put out the flames.

According to the fire officer, Satish Kumar, sparks from the exhaust pipe of a tempo truck, which had unloaded cotton, may caused the fire.

14 hurt as two buses collide

NELLORE: Fourteen passengers were injured when two RTC buses collided near Momidi village of Chillakuru mandal on Monday. The injured were admitted to hospitals.

Meanwhile, three persons sustained injuries in road accidents in Kota mandal.

Trade union leader feted

HYDERABAD: The INTUC president, G. Sanjeeva Reddy, was felicitated by members of the State unit on being awarded honorary Doctorate by Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi.

A programme was organised here on Tuesday to felicitate Mr. Reddy on his appointment as the member of National Integration Council also. The INTUC general secretary, V. Ramulu, and others were present.

Drop in night temperature

Hyderabad: The State's lowest night temperature fell to 12 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. It was recorded at Medak. Weather, otherwise was dry in the State. Minimum temperatures changed little in the State. According to a forecast by the State Met Office, mainly dry weather will prevail in the State on Wednesday.
