VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 30. The State bandh call given by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday in protest against the "anti-people policies" of the State Government evoked partial response in Krishna district. Barring stray incidents of obstructing RTC buses, the bandh passed off peacefully. Thirty seven BJP activists were detained by the Krishna Lanka police when they attempted to deflate the tyres of buses at the Pandit Nehru Bus Station.
Appeal to shopkeepers
On route No. 5 near Pushpa Hotel, the protesters stopped a city bus and deflated the tyres before police intervened. The BJP activists went round some commercial areas like One Town, Eluru, Besant Road and appealed to shopkeepers to down their shutters. However, in the rest of the city the normal life remained unaffected. "The bandh evoked good response in parts of the city, Gannavaram, Tirruvur, Mylavaram and Jaggaiahpeta. It was partial at Machilipatnam and Gudivada," the BJP city unit president, L.R.K.Prasad, said.
No harm to RTC
According to the Regional Manager of the APSRTC Krishna region, U. Sudhakara Rao, protesters obstructed the movement of the buses at Avanigadda, Tiruvur and Nuzivid for 20 to 30 minutes, before police intervened. However, barring such minor incidents there were no hindrances to the corporation's services, Mr. Rao said. He said that the long distances bus services to Shirdi, Hyderabad and Bangalore were not disrupted.
