BANGALORE, NOV. 30. More than 600 domestic workers, most of them girls below 16 years of age, have been identified in a few areas of Bangalore by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as part of the "Domestic Child-labour Elimination" Project. A majority of the children hired as domestic help are 14 years. Some of them are only five. Ninety-eight per cent of the children hired are girls. The project is an initiative of the State Government, district administration, Department of Labour, UNICEF and NGOs including the Association for Promotion of Social Action (in HAL and Koramangala), Stree Jagruthi Samriti (Jayanagar and J.P. Nagar), and Paraspara Trust (Malleswaram and Yeshwantpur). The children are being rescued as part of the project and under the recently announced minimum wage notification for domestic workers. Rescued children will be brought before the Child Welfare Committee. Those between five and 14 years will be sent to residential schools for two years.
