BANGALORE, NOV. 30. A railway employee from M.G. Colony, Ranganath, who left Rs. 3.8 lakhs in cash in a compartment of his scooter which he had parked on 10th Cross, Malleswaram, returned to find that the money had been stolen, on Monday night. Mr. Ranganath, a resident of the railway quarters in M.G. Colony, and his friend were on their way to pay the second instalment of Rs. 3.8 lakhs for purchasing for him a house worth Rs. 10 lakhs, and they had stopped in Malleswaram to consult a lawyer. They were in the lawyer's office for 15 minutes and on their return found that someone had stolen the cash from the scooter compartment after opening it with a duplicate key. The Malleswaram police are investigating.
Burglary
Burglars broke into a cellphone showroom on 5th Main Road in Ganganagar on Monday and took away phones and cellphone currency worth about Rs. 1 lakh. The burglars broke open rolling shutters to enter the shop.
Robberies
An autorickshaw driver and three others assaulted a passenger and robbed him of Rs. 200 in cash, a cellphone and gold chain, valued at about Rs. 15,000 in all, in the Kamakshipalya police station limits on Monday. Rajesh, an employee of the ICICI Bank, had hired the autorickshaw to return to his residence in HBR Layout after having dinner with a friend in a hotel in Basaveswaranagar. On the way, three others boarded the vehicle. Mr. Rajesh objected, but the driver assured him that he would drop them at a place nearby. The driver took the vehicle to Kamakshipalya and, along with the others, allegedly assaulted Mr. Rajesh and robbed him. In another incident, some persons stopped a cyclist, Ravi Kumar, in Nagarabhavi 2nd Stage, and robbed him of Rs. 500 in cash and a wristwatch on Monday night. The Jnanabharathi police are investigating.
Chain snatched
Two persons snatched a gold chain worth about Rs. 17,000 from a woman in Jayanagar 7th Block on Monday night. The woman, Geetha, was walking her dog near her house when the two persons, who alighted from an autorickshaw, approached her and sought directions to a place. They snatched the gold chain, according to the police. The Jayanagar police are investigating.
Man suffers burns
An 80-year-old man, Kempanna, suffered burns and 30 sheep, four goats, four cows and four buffaloes perished in a fire in a cattle shed in Hoskote police station limits on the outskirts of the city on Monday night. Fire-fighters rushed Kempanna to hospital from the shed, located near Bidaranahalli in Byappanahalli. The Hoskote police have registered a case.
Theft charge
The Shankarpuram police on Friday arrested Ananda Gowda (32) of Hanumanthagowdanapalya and Ramakrishna alias Soma (32) of Jayanagar 1st Block and recovered automobile parts, a van and a motorcycle, valued at Rs. 3.4 lakhs in all. The accused allegedly stole the van from Shankarpuram 2nd Cross on November 18 and were trying to sell its parts. They were also allegedly involved in cases of theft in Siddapura and Basavanagudi police station limits, the police said. They have been remanded to judicial custody.
Gambling case
Eight persons were arrested when they were allegedly gambling with lottery tickets on Marappanapalya Bridge road in the R.M.C. Yard police limits on Monday. A colour TV, lottery tickets and cash were seized from them. The police gave the names of the accused as Kannan (31), Bhaskar (44), Krishnamurthy (31), Selvakumar (19), Thomas (35), Manjunath (32), Ramesh (25) and Somashekhar (32).
Engineer dies
in accident
V.K. Purushottam (25), an engineer with a private company, was killed when a lorry reportedly hit his motorcycle on MES Road in Yeshwanthpur police station limits on Tuesday. The police said Purushottam was a resident of Bashyamnagar. The Yeshwanthapur traffic police seized the lorry and arrested the driver.
Suicide
Dorai Babu (35), a photographer, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in 4th Cross, Magadi Road, around 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The police said Babu, father of a baby girl, was in debts. The K.P. Agrahara police have registered a case. In another incident, Shankar (28), a labourer, ended his life by hanging himself at his house in NGR Layout in MICO Layout police station limits on Monday night.
