Govt. taking steps to improve access to Shravanabelagola

By Our Staff Correspondent

SHRAVANABELAGOLA, DEC. 1. Priority will be accorded to connecting Shravanabelagola by road, rail and air to help pilgrims coming here for the Mahamastakabhisheka to be held in February 2006, the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, he said Rs. 10 crores would be spent on connecting Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya through the Charmadi Ghat and Rs. 3.50 crores would be spent on the construction of a bridge.

Work on the Belur bridge would be taken up to help tourists and pilgrims attending the Mahamastakabhisheka visit Belur and Halebid.

Work on all roads connecting Shravanabelagola would be completed before the next monsoon and asphalting would be taken up after November 2005, the Minister said.

The survey work on converting the road between Hassan and Nelamangala into a four-lane one was on, he said and added that the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu, had promised that the work would commence by April. Mr. Revanna said work on the railway line between Hassan and Shravanabelagola would be completed by next March.

He noted that the former Prime Minister and Hassan MP, H.D. Deve Gowda, had urged the Union Minister for Railways, Lalu Prasad, to ensure that the Hassan-Bangalore railway line passed through Shravanabelagola.

Air link

Mr. Revanna said the Government was serious about building an airstrip at Bhuvanahalli near Hassan to help tourists and pilgrims from across the country visiting Shravanabelagola. A delegation of the State Government would meet the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Praful Patel, soon in this regard, he added.

The State Government had agreed to release Rs. 25 crores to take up development works in and around Shravanabelagola to meet the requirements of about 25 lakh pilgrims who were expected to visit Shravanabelagola during the Mahamastakabhisheka, he said. The Union Government would be urged to release funds to make the Mahamastakabhisheka a memorable event. The committee formed for the purpose of organising the event would meet soon to chalk out strategies in this regard, he added.

Water supply

It had been decided to pump water to Shravanabelagola from the Hemavathy at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 crores, he said. Since this would be a permanent arrangement, Sri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji of Shravanabelagola had agreed to maintain the water supply system after the completion of the event, he added.

A 50-bed hospital would be set up at Shravanabelagola to take care of the medical requirements of the pilgrims.

Sri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji said a State-level committee had been formed with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, as the chief patron and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and D. Veerendra Heggade of Srikshetra Dharmasthala as patrons. Mr. Revanna would be the Chairman of the committee, he added.

C.S. Putte Gowda, Channarayapatna MLA; Manjunath, member of the Hassan Zilla Panchayat; and senior officials were present.
