SUCHETGARH, DEC.1. The Jammu and Kashmir Government has started work to widen the Suchetgarh-Sialkot road which will link Suchetgarh with the rest of the country. The narrow road now does not permit free flow of vehicles. As per the Government proposal, Rs.1 crore will be spent on the road widening work from R.S. Pura town to Suchetgarh that is about 10 km away. In first stage Rs.3 lakhs will be spent on metalling 250 metres of the road network till the zero line. The Minister of State for Rural Development, Garu Ram, who laid the foundation stone for the road improvement work said: "The opening of the road would be the best New Year gift I can give it to my constituency. For years economic progress had come to a stand still and now I hope things will change when the road is finally opened."
Main demand
The opening of the road has been the main demand of the People's Democratic Party Congress Government and has been mentioned in the recent nine-point proposal of the Union Home Ministry for the improvement of State, released two days ago. The Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, told The Hindu that the opening of the road was also a priority of his Government. "It is the will of the people living on both sides of the border... " The State Government proposal appears to have received a boost with the Pakistan Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, taking up the issue of opening of the Suchetgarh-Sialkot road network during his recent talks with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.
