Drip irrigation improves tobacco quality: expert

Drip irrigation can help enhance the quality of tobacco, according to an expert from Israel on micro irrigation techniques, Nir Aloni.
Delivering a guest lecture on "Prospects of drip irrigation system in FCV tobacco production" at the Central Tobacco Research Institute (CTRI) here on Wednesday, he pointed out that drip irrigation was a micro irrigation technique which is used for the production of several crops in the world to achieve yield and quality enhancement.''
Water saving
Mr.Aloni said there was a possibility of reducing the percentage of chlorides in FCV (flue cured Virginia) tobacco leaf through drip irrigation system and enhancing its quality for meeting global requirements. Explaining the techniques involved for water-use efficiency in FCV tobacco production, he said water could be saved to the extent of 40 to 50 per cent through drip irrigation system.
