Civic amenities sought

KOLLAM Dec. 1. The Kollam Residents Apex Council (Resco) today took out a march to the city corporation office demanding proper street lighting and garbage clearance in the city. The march was inaugurated by the RESCO general secretary, C. Amalolbhavan, and led by the RESCO leaders, Sooranad K.B, Madhusoodanan Nair, V.S. Nasser, S. Suvarna Kumar and T.Y. Naushad.

`Turtle Walk'

KOZHIKODE DEC.1. The Kozhikode-based Malabar Natural History Society (MNHS) and Neythal, organisation, will conduct `Turtle Walk' at Thaikadapuram, Nileswaram, on December 4 and 5. The programme will focus on marine turtles and their breeding habitat. For details, contact secretary, MNHS at: 9447470439.

Vaccination

Vaccination facilities are being provided to the 9409 hajis undertaking pilgrimage through private Haj groups. Arrangements to this effect have been made at all district medical centres according to a press release from the secretary, All India Haj Umrah Tour Organisers Association.

Film festival

A film festival will be organised as part of the `Malabar Maholsav' to be held from January 26 to 31. A website on the festival will be made. The main venue for the programme will be the stadium grounds. Details of the `Malabar Maholsav,' annual tourist attraction in Kozhikode, were discussed at a meeting of people's representatives, representatives of social and cultural organisations and officials at the Collectorate.

RPF security

PALAKKAD DEC. 1. The new Mobilisation Hall for Railway Projection Force (RPF) personnel was opened at the Palakkad Railway Junction by K.S. Balasubramanian, Inspector General-cum-Chief Security Commissioner of RPF, Southern Railway, at a function here today. The Rs.20-lakh hall was allotted to the RPF in view of the recent amendment to the Railway rules in which the RPF was given additional powers for providing security to passengers.

`Save ITI Day'

The officers and employees of Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) of Kanjikode, near here, observed `Save ITI Day' today.

The employees of the company attended the meeting and took a pledge to save the company from the present crisis. The crisis was due to certain `wrong policies of the company's corporate management.'

Karunakaran discharged

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM DEC. 1. The senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, who had been admitted to the medical college hospital last week with respiratory infection, was discharged on Wednesday morning. He has completely recovered from his illness and his general health was satisfactory, a MCH official said.

SBT revises interest rates

The State Bank of Travancore (SBT) increased the interest rates for NRE term deposits and FCNR deposits in US dollars, pound sterling and euro for various periods from 1 to 3 years, with effect from today. The revised rates for NRE term deposits of one year to less than 2 years is 3.50 per cent; for 2 years to less than 3 years it is 3.90 per cent and for 3 years and above up to 5 years it is 4.20 per cent. The revised rates for US dollar FCNR deposits of one year to less than 2 years is 2.73 per cent; 2 years to les than 3 years is 3.12 per cent and for 3 years is 3.41 per cent. The rates for pound sterling deposits for the period mentioned above will be 4.65 per cent, 4.58 per cent and 4.60 per cent respectively. The corresponding rates for deposits in euro are 2.05, 2.28 and 2.52 per cent respectively.

MYL to take out rally

KOZHIKODE DEC. 1. The Muslim Youth League (MYL) State president, Syed Sadiquali Shihab Thangal, will lead a State-wide rally from Kasaragod on February 1 demanding that the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government implement a special recruitment drive based on the Narendran Commission findings. The rally will culminate with a march to the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on February 28, the Thangal and the MYL State general secretary, K.M. Shaji, told presspersons here today.

Notice to Minister's personal staff

Kochi Dec. 1. The Bar Council of Kerala has again sent a notice to Najmal Babu, a personal staff of the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, to appear before the council to explain his action in suppressing certain facts in an application given by him for enrolling as a lawyer. The Bar Council Secretary, N. S. Gopakumar, said that though Mr. Najmal had received the notice, he failed to appear before the council. The counsel for Mr. Najmal yesterday filed an application seeking to exempt him from appearing before the council for a day.

CIAL board meeting

Nedumbassery DEC. 1. The director board meeting of Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), Nedumbassery, will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, tomorrow at 3.30 p.m. The meeting will be chaired by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, who is also the chairman of the company.

10,080 litres of spirit seized

PALAKKAD DEC. 1. The Excise Department officials have seized 10,080 litres of spirit estimated at Rs. 30 lakhs from a container lorry at the inter-State Walayar checkpost on Tuesday night. The lorry was coming from Bangalore to Kochi. The document of the consignment seized showed that the container was transporting electric transformers meant for export. But on close scrutiny it was found that they were fake documents. Cases were registered against the driver and owner of the container.

Supreme Court panel sitting

The Central Empowered Committee constituted by the Supreme Court to assist the court in forest cases will have its sitting at the Palakkad Government Guest House here on December 6 and 7 to inquire into the functioning of illegal sandal oil companies.

Sabarimala annual fete

PATHANAMTHITTA DEC. 1. The 10-day annual festival at the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala will be held from December 7 to 16. The `Kodiyettu' ceremony will be held at Muhurtham betweem 9.25 a.m. to 10.25 a.m. on December 7.

The `Utsavabali' will be held after the `Utcha' pooja from December 8 to 15.

The `Utcha' pooja at the Ayyappa Temple during the festival period will be at 12 noon.
