This Day That Age
The Lok Sabha on December 2 heard a rather unusual protest against its quick disposal of business, when there were no speakers. Mr. S.V. Ramaswamy (Congress-Madras) raised a point of order about the disposal (of the clauses relating to jurors) in 17 minutes on December 1 as against the allotted three hours. The Deputy Speaker, Mr. Ananthasayanam Iyengar, rejected the point of order and asked whether members expected him to sit quiet or adjourn the House if there were no speakers. Every minute of the time of the House counted, he said. When a couple of other members said they had tabled amendments but had no opportunity to move them, Mr. Iyengar said it was a responsibility they owed to their constituencies to be present in the House and be attentive. "I wonder", said the Deputy Speaker, "what their constituencies are going to do next time so far as such members are concerned."
