More U.S. troops for Iraq

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, DEC. 2. The Pentagon has said it will increase the troop strength in Iraq by about 12,000, bringing the figure to 150,000 — the highest since the occupation began some 19 months ago.

The increase involves extending the deployment of units and sending small reinforcements for four months. The Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, has signed the orders to extend the tour of duty of 10,400 combat personnel and to send an additional 1500 soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division.

The increase is obviously with an eye on the election now scheduled for the end of January and in the face of increased militancy and casualties.
