BANGALORE, DEC. 2. The expansion of the N. Dharam Singh-led coalition Ministry in the State is expected early next week with the Congress High Command being seized of the matter. The party High Command has also impressed on the Chief Minister the need to expedite the matter. After receiving a phone call from the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, the Chief Minister rushed to New Delhi early today. He was closeted with the Congress General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka affairs and former Chief Minister of Kerala, A.K. Antony, and the Political Secretary to the Congress president, Ahmed Patel, for most part of the day after a 30-minute meeting with Ms. Sonia Gandhi. Sources said Ms. Sonia Gandhi asked the Chief Minister to prepare a list of the party legislators to be accommodated in the Ministry in consultation with Mr. Antony and Mr. Patel. The sources told The Hindu that the swearing-in of the new Ministers would in all likelihood take place on December 8 subject to the concurrence given by Ms. Sonia Gandhi and the former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) President, H.D. Deve Gowda. The sources said the final round of discussion on the subject would take place on Friday.
`Trip, a surprise'
Mr. Dharam Singh said, "I have commenced the Ministry expansion exercise in all earnestness. I had maintained that the expansion would come as a surprise and my trip to New Delhi today to call on the Congress President must have come as a surprise to many. In a coalition set-up, it takes time to arrive at a decision on some important matters."
