Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 2. The All-Trade Unions Joint Action Committee, formed to protect the State-owned Anglo French Textiles (AFT) here, has presented a seven-point charter on toning up the mill to the Pondicherry administration. The president of the action committee, V.S. Abishegam, told presspersons here today that the mill, with 3, 540 workers was the main source of foreign exchange and taxes for the administration. Though the Central Government had earmarked around Rs. 104 crores for the modernisation of the mill, progress was slow, Mr. Abishegam said. The action committee's suggestions included utilisation of funds earmarked for modernisation, boosting exports, enhancement of wages as recommended by a Special Industrial Tribunal and strengthening the mill's structures.
