PONDICHERRY, DEC. 2. The sixth annual shopping festival will be held for a month from December 20 in Pondicherry and Karaikal. The Education and Tourism Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, told presspersons here today that a committee had been set up to conduct the festival aimed at showcasing Pondicherry through tourism and boost business. Around four hundred shops and establishments would participate. Special prizes will be offered to buyers during the festival. There will also be consolation prizes for 9,000 people. The festival would be held only in Pondicherry and Karaikal and not in Mahe and Yanam. However, a separate cultural festival would be held in Yanam for three days from January 8, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said. There was good response for the annual festival with the sales turnover last year touching Rs. 40 crores and the revenue by way of sales tax to the State Exchequer hitting Rs. 1 crore. Mr. Lakshminaryanan said that the main purpose of holding the fete was to remove the impression that the business sector here had taken a hit in the wake of the uniform sales tax.
