Disability Day in hospital

NEW DELHI DEC. 2. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is organising several activities on its premises this Friday to mark World Disability Day. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has constituted a multidisciplinary team of specialists to attend to patients suffering from all types of physical disabilities like polio, cerebral palsy, paralysis, arthritis, muscular diseases and mental disabilities. The team will also offer guidance to their families.

A film show for the benefit of patients and fun games have also been organised. In addition, there will be an exhibition of various devices, aids and appliances.

The Chairman of the hospital's Board of Management, Dr. S.K. Sama, will inaugurate the programme. This will be followed by lecture on Disability Act, 1995 and its current status of implementation by Uma Tuli, Chief Commissioner for People with Disability, Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

The hospital will also felicitate two luminaries in the field, Harish Goyal and R. Johar, who in spite of their physical disability have risen to serve the cause of the disabled in society.

A musical evening

NEW DELHI DEC. 2. Folk ensemble "Kumovya'' from the Kuban region of Russia presented a colourful music, song and dance performance at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture here on Wednesday.

The show was organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and the Russian Federal State Unitary Enterprise to mark the official visit of the Russian President, Vladimir V. Putin, to India. A large number of members from the diplomatic corps attended the show.

Book released

NEW DELHI DEC. 2. The Japanese ambassador, Yasukuni Enoki, released a book titled "Buddhist Thought And Culture" at his residence here on Tuesday.

The Coordinator of University Grant Commission's Special Assistance Programme in Philosophy, S.R. Bhatt, has edited the book, which is a tribute to Hajime Nakamura, a world-renowned thinker and an admirer of Indian culture.

The former Indian High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, L.M. Singhvi, was also present on the occasion.

`Common front to fight AIDS'

NEW DELHI DEC. 2. Prominent interfaith leaders have called upon religious world leaders to forge a common front for prevention, control and care of those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

They were taking part in the "International Interfaith Conference" at the Amity campus in Noida on Wednesday. At the end of their day-long deliberations, the interfaith leaders adopted a "Delhi Declaration" that sent out the message that a comprehensive national response to HIV/AIDS must factor in the power and influence exercised by religious and faiths on the lives of the people.

The conference was organised by the Amity Humanity Foundation and the Nations AIDS Control Organisation.

Focus on Disability Acts

NEW DELHI DEC. 2. The shortcomings of disability legislations enacted in the country so far were identified at the four-day national summit on "Disability Human Rights, Law and Policy" being held at Jawaharlal Nehru University here.

On the occasion, the World Bank Consultant, Meenu Bhambhani, critically examined the emergence of the disability rights movement in India "Efforts on the part of the community was the need of the hour to empower the existing legislations," said Dr. Bhambhani.
