SALEM, DEC. 2. Doctors of a few government hospitals and primary health centres (PHC) in Salem and nearby districts were transferred immediately to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Memorial Medical College Hospital here. Many joined duty this morning. The transfers coincided with a two-day visit by a three-member Medical Council of India (MCI) team from today to assess the infrastructure and speciality care facilities in the college and the hospital to decide on the State's demand for doubling undergraduate seats to 150. Highly-placed sources in the hospital said the Government sought the willingness of doctors to serve in Salem. Sixteen of them responded positively. Hence they were issued ``transfer'' orders. All the transferred doctors were asked to join duty before the beginning of the MCI inspection. "No deputation and no duplication," said a senior doctor here. According to a senior nursing assistant, the hospital administration forced some of the employees to do ``double shift'' today in all wards ``due to an acute shortage of nurses and helpers." Nearly 80 posts of nurse, other paramedical and technical staff, had been vacant for long, they said.
