CHENNAI, DEC. 2. The State Government will file a counter-petition in the Supreme Court, submitting that the reservation system is being adopted in admissions, under the management quota, to self-financing engineering and medical colleges the Education Minister, C.Ve.Shanmugam, said today. Referring to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president, M.Karunanidhi's charge that the advocate who appeared on behalf of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam Government told the court that it would not insist on implementation of the reservation policy in the management quota, Mr. Shanmugam said in a statement here that the Supreme Court had not passed any order. As it had only asked the Government to file its counter within four weeks, Mr.Karunanidhi need not have expressed dismay, he said, cautioning against spreading "misinformation" when the case was before the court. Managements of some colleges went in appeal as the High Court had upheld the State Government's order that reservation be implemented in admissions under the management quota, the Minister recalled. The DMK regime did not take steps to follow the reservation policy in admissions to colleges under the payment or management quota, he claimed. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary, N.Varadarajan, urged the Government to give up its "anti-reservation policy" and ensure that the quota system was followed in admissions under the management quota to the self-financing colleges.
