CPI condemns police action

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 2. The Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, has condemned the police action in which some students of the Government Arts College who came to write examinations were arrested.

Mr. Bhargavan said that the police entered the college campus without seeking permission of the principal.

The police were deliberately creating trouble in the city, he alleged.

He demanded the immediate release of the students.

It was improper on the part of the police to enter an educational institution without the permission of the authorities concerned.

With the arrest of the students it has become clear that the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has `let the police force loose to perpetrate any injustice on the public,' he alleged.

A lot of students who were writing their examination at the University College on Wednesday could not continue with the examination following the explosion of tear gas shells inside the campus, Mr. Bhargavan alleged.

The CPI leader demanded immediate action against the Circle Inspector who order the arrest of the students.

AISF flays attack

In a press release, the AISF condemned the alleged assault by the police on the youth wing activists of Left parties who were on Wednesday demanding the ouster of the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, for his alleged involvement in the ice-cream parlour sex scandal case.

The AISF president, Liju Jamal, and the secretary, Mahesh Kakkath, alleged that the police assaulted the protesters without any provocation.

The leaders said that the people of the State would resist any move to suppress the on-going agitation against Mr. Kunhalikutty.

The Chief Minister should show the democratic propriety to expel the tainted minister, the leaders said.
