Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 2. The entire students fraternity in the Medical College, including junior doctors and post-graduate medical students, went on a strike and staged a dharna in front of the office of the Director of Medical Education (DME) on Thursday, protesting against the appointment of M.Sc. graduates as lecturers in the Anatomy Departments at all Medical Colleges in the State. The members of the teaching staff in Anatomy Department also joined the students' protest. Six M.Sc. graduates, who were given appointment orders to join various medical college hospitals, had to go back without joining duty following the massive protests by the medicos. The medicos later met the Health Minister and the DME. Following discussions, the Government agreed to freeze the appointment orders till the court gave the final verdict on the issue.
Post-graduates' charge
The Post-Graduates' Association of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College said that the Government was violating the directives of the Indian Medical Council (IMC) and the interim orders given by the High Court regarding the issue.
Guidelines
The guidelines for appointment of teachers in medical colleges say that 30 per cent of the total vacancies in non-clinical departments like anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology and pharmacology may be filled by M.Sc. graduates. However, the IMC had also issued a directive that M.Sc. graduates may be appointed only if there are no medical graduates in the waiting list for the said vacancies.
