Lorry owners seek revision of ban order

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, DEC. 2. The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association on Thursday asked for revision in the timings of the ban on movement of heavy vehicles on Bannerghatta, Hosur, Mysore and Yeshwanthpur roads in the city. The present timings affected transportation of building material for the ongoing road works and construction of bridges on and around these roads, it said.

The police recently prohibited movement of heavy vehicles from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on these roads.

G.R. Shanmugappa, President of the Association, told presspersons that most of the material was being moved in the mornings. The ban on movement of lorries during this time would delay reaching the material to the construction sites.

He said if the trucks left at one go during the free hours, it would increase the traffic on the roads. They would bring these problems to the notice of the City Police Commissioner, S. Mariswamy. He said a similar ban had been imposed in Hubli-Dharwad also.

Mr. Shanmugappa said the Transport Department's stoppage of registration of new lorries and issuance of new permits and temporary permits in accordance with a direction of the High Court of Karnataka had affected their work. The non-issuance of temporary permits, he said, had made it hard for the transporters to take goods to other States.

He said the All India Motor Transport Congress would soon discuss with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu, the issue of collecting of Rs. 1.75 per km at the toll gates of the national highways constructed under the Golden Quadrilateral Project. The amount being collected, he said, was in addition to the fuel cess of Rs. 1.40 per litre of diesel being paid by them for the past three years.
