New post for Vijay Kumar
CHENNAI DEC. 2. K. Vijay Kumar, chief of the Special Task Force (STF), who was promoted Director-General of Police after the successful operation against the forest brigand, Veerappan, on October 18 last, has been transferred and posted as Project Officer for the School of Excellence and S.I. Training Academy, Chennai. An official release here today said he would be in charge of special operations including the Tamil Nadu Commando Force and the Tamil Nadu Commando School. He would also continue to be the STF Chief. K. N. Sathiyamurthy, Superintendent of Police, has been posted as SP, Tamil Nadu Commando Force, Chennai, in the place of C. Easwaramoorthy, who has already been transferred. R. Ramrajan, SP, is posted as Commandant, Regimental Centre, Avadi, Chennai, vice S. Panneerselvam, who has already been transferred.
Anna varsity clarification
CHENNAI DEC. 2. Anna University today said it had not granted affiliation for three courses B.E. Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petrochemical Technology in the Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering, Sriperumbudur, for 2004-2005. Referring to an advertisement issued by the college calling for spot admission to these courses, the university said "those who are applying for admission to these courses do so at their own risk." Chamber chairman elected
CHENNAI DEC. 2. The Chairman and Managing Director of Sundram Fasteners Limited, Suresh Krishna, has been elected chairman of the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. N. Murali, Joint Managing Director of The Hindu , was elected vice-chairman at a general body meeting here on November 30. The other office-bearers are R. Veeramani, chairman of Gem Granites, president, and P.R. Venketrama Raja, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Ramco Industries Limited, vice-president. N. Krishnaswami, Director, Japan India Business Info. Services, would be the secretary, according to a release.
`Search and rescue'
CHENNAI DEC. 2. Speakers at a national seminar-cum-workshop on `Search and Rescue Operations', organised by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), stressed the importance of the satellite-based Global Positioning System technology for enhancing accuracy to provide better services in emergency situations. Sujan Kumar Saraswati, Southern Regional Executive Director, AAI, said he was entrusted with coordinating and conducting aviation-related search and rescue operations over the Indian subcontinent and adjoining oceanic areas. R. Karpoorasundarapandian, Special Commissioner and Secretary (Transport), Tamil Nadu Government, listed the initiatives by the State Government, especially to enhance safety on highways. With the creation of emergency medical assistance centres on major highways, they were able to provide immediate attention to victims and save 10,000 lives. S. Santhakumar, Dean Academics, IIT, Chennai, spoke on the importance of the preparedness of various agencies coordinating with the AAI during search and rescue operations. He wanted the agencies to put to effective use modern information technology for enhancing the operations. Commodore R.S. Vasan, (retired) Coast Guard Eastern Region chief, appealed to the delegates and representatives of the various agencies to attach greater importance to real-time situations. N.U.B. Rao, General Manager (Aerodrome), Chennai, and C.P. Purushothaman, General Manager (Aerodrome), Southern Region, said the purpose of the meet, organised as part of the Aviation Safety Week observed in 2004, was to bring together all agencies to create greater awareness and enhance preparedness during emergencies.
