25 killed in major attacks in Baghdad

By Atul Aneja

MANAMA, DEC. 3. Employing classic guerilla tactics, Iraqi resistance fighters today mounted a daring raid on a Baghdad police station, freeing at least 50 prisoners and seizing many weapons. At least 11 policemen were killed in the attack.

An estimated 14 persons were killed and 19 wounded when a car bomb exploded outside a Shia mosque in a Baghdad neighbourhood early today. A suicide bomber apparently detonated explosives in the car near the Hamid al-Alwan mosque, as people were leaving after morning prayers.

Eyewitnesses said the guerillas had approached the police station from all directions, taken cover behind some trash bins and started firing. The attackers took away the weapons from the armoury of the police station, which is well fortified as it is close to the high security main airport highway. They also set alight several cars.

Similar tactics

Iraqi resistance fighters adopted similar tactics when they recently stormed nine police stations in Mosul, taking away with them weapons, flak jackets and police vehicles. More than 60 bodies believed to be of Iraqi soldiers and National Guardsmen have also been found in Mosul. An Islamic Web site carried a statement purportedly from Al-Qaeda linked militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi claiming responsibility for the attack.

"The lions of Al-Qaeda in Iraq attacked the headquarters of the apostates who sold their religion, honour and land ... and attacked the Seydiya police station, killing everyone inside except for two who fled," the statement said.

Clashes between guerillas and the U.S. Iraqi forces have been reported from Mosul. NATO's Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is visiting the alliance's military training mission in Iraq.
