Special team leaves for Chennai to arrest Usha

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI, DEC. 3. The Srikalahasti police, who are probing an alleged cheating and forgery case registered against Usha and her husband, R.L. Narayanan, are only waiting to arrest her. Sources said the Tamil Nadu police, who have interrogated Usha in connection with the Sankararaman murder case, have told their Srikalahasti counterparts to wait till their own enquiries were over.

A special team, which had secured an arrest warrant against Ms. Usha, is said to have already left for Chennai.

The team also includes senior officials from State Bank of India which gave the couple a Rs. 30-lakh loan in 1997 on the basis of some documents which, they alleged, turned out to be forged ones resulting in the pending case with the Srikalahasti police. The unpaid loan and interest is now pegged at Rs. 43 lakhs while the cement brick unit at Gundeligunta, near Srikalahasti, for which they borrowed the money is now bereft of any building or machinery which were reportedly carted away by the private debtors who scented trouble.

In an interview to a leading Telugu daily, Ms. Usha has blamed her husband for all the problems.

She claimed that she merely signed on dotted lines when Mr. Narayanan showed her some documents least expecting that he would desert her.

She also told the daily that when her husband was evading the police dragnet it was she who actually helped the Nanganallur police (in Chennai) to arrest him in December 2001.

"As such, I wondered why they should now try to kick up a bogey that I am missing after having let me go at that time," she said.
