Table Tennis
BANGALORE, DEC. 3. The Petroleum Sports Promotion Board's inter-unit championship, an important fixture in the Table Tennis Federation of India's calendar, gets underway at the Canara Union hall here on Saturday. HPCL is hosting the event. About 120 players from various units of PSPB will participate in the championship, which would be a sort of mini Nationals. Leading contenders include the National and Commonwealth champion, Sharath Kamal (men) and National and Commonwealth bronze medallist, Poulami Ghatak. Both incidentally are the defending champions in the men's and women's sections respectively. Other top players in the fray include junior champion Soumyadeep Roy, Subhajit Saha, former National champions Arup Basak, Mouma Das and M.S. Mythili. Veteran S. Ramaswamy of HPCL, who has figured in a record 28 Nationals, will also be seen in action. The championship will be held in two phases with the team event on Saturday and Sunday followed by the open events. Indian Oil Corporation and Oil India Ltd. were the last year's winners in the men's and women's team events respectively. N.V. Raman of Karnataka will be the chief referee for the championship. After the PSPB championship, all the leading players will stay back for the South Zone championship, scheduled to be held here from December 9 to 14. Our Special Correspondent
