Ability, not disability on display

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, DEC. 3 . World Disability Day was celebrated with such style in the city that one wondered whether it should be called "World Ability Day." "Disability is not of the body," sang students at the Government Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, K. K. Nagar, this morning.

Indeed. The audience at a colourful cultural event in the city organised by the Commissionerate of Disabilities was spellbound by the grace and rhythm of the dance performances; imagine the crowd's stunned amazement when it was announced that the performers could not hear the music. The children were simply following the cue given by their teacher sitting before the dais.

It was a time for fun, eats, clapping and rejoicing as they celebrated a day set aside for them — to show what the disabled were capable of, and Government ministers were at hand to see it.

Health Minister, Thalavai Sundaram, said the Government was working closely with the private sector to come up with measures to overcome and prevent disabilities.

The Rural Industries Minister, B. Valarmathi, said physical disability had less to do with the body and more to do with the mind. The Ministers distributed prizes to winners of various competitions held for the disabled, wheel chairs, artificial limbs and callipers.

The Social Welfare Minister, Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy, distributed aids and appliances, including tricycles, wheelchairs, callipers, crutches, artificial limbs, hearing aids with solar batteries, Braille watches, white canes, folding sticks and goggles worth Rs.2.8 lakhs.
