Corporation replaces 49 workers

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, DEC. 3. Forty-nine contract workers in the streetlight maintenance section of the Mangalore City Corporation have lost their jobs.

These skilled workers came to work on Friday morning only to find that they had been replaced.

These workers were working with the contractor since 1987. They had abstained from work on Wednesday in protest against the stagnation in salaries for five years.

According to the workers, the Labour Department of the State Government had put an embargo on giving new contracts until the services of the 49 labourers were regularised.

The matter was in court.

The ban had been in force for the past three years. But the corporation decided to call for tenders for the contract.

The workers had demanded Rs. 150 a day as against the Rs. 85 a day paid to them. Their other demands were issuing of identity cards, weekly off, an eight-hour day, medical benefits, maintenance of attendance register, and Provident Fund benefits.

The workers had approached the Commissioner, chairpersons of the Accounts Committee and the Tax and Finance Committee in this regard.
