Govt. urged to revive Red Gram Development Board

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, DEC. 4. The president of the Jewargi Taluk Raita Horata Samiti, Kedarlingaiah Hiremath, urged the State Government today to revive the Red Gram Development Board and protect the interests of farmers cultivating red gram.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Hiremath said that the board had been established in 2004 with a share capital of Rs. 5 crores to intervene in the market when the price of red gram crashed in the wholesale market.

Research

The board was also supposed to take up research and development activities, and undertake the marketing of red gram on behalf of the farmers. He said that the board was not functional now.

So far, the board had not procured any grain and the share capital was being used to pay salaries and rent for the office building.

He said that during his recent meeting with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, in Bangalore in this regard, the Chief Minister had promised to initiate measures to revive the board.

Mr. Dharam Singh had also promised to convene a meeting of senior officials in Bangalore on December 10 to discuss the measures to be initiated to revive the activities of the board.

Delegation

Mr. Hiremath said a delegation of farmers from the region would meet the Chief Minister in Bangalore on December 10 and present their views about the functioning of the board. They would also submit a memorandum suggesting various measures to revive the board.

He said that the price of red gram had started decreasing in the wholesale market and at present it was around Rs. 1,600 per quintal.

He said that this was very low and urged the State Government to initiate measures to procure red gram through the development board at a minimum support price of Rs. 2,000 per quintal. The minimum support price of Rs. 1,710 per quintal fixed by the Union Government was not remunerative, Mr. Hiremath said.

Objectives

He said that the objectives of the board clearly stated that it would undertake all promotional activities relating to red gram, work as an agent of the State Government in exploiting the potential of red gram cultivation, identify advanced technology in the production and processing of red gram and extend it to the growers and processing units, coordinate in the transfer of high technical services to red gram farmers, supply essential inputs to farmers. However, none of these objectives had been implemented by the board so far, he charged.

He said that it was unfortunate that the State Government had not nominated a full time chairman to the board. He demanded the reconstitution of the board and a person with thorough knowledge about red gram and the problems faced by growers be appointed as chairman of the board immediately.
