Workshop on examinations begins

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM, DEC. 4. The former Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, M.I. Saundatti, has called for effective reforms in higher education system.

Inaugurating a workshop on "Introduction of reforms in the conduct of examination process" organised by the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) at Machhe on Saturday, he said that most reforms remained on paper and only a few were implemented. Reforms in the conduct of examination system must start from the stage of setting up question papers. The universities should ensure that the questions were not repeated.

Mr. Saundatti said that students were finding it easier to get through examinations after solving question papers of the preceding five years. This only indicated that questions were being repeated. He also said that a good evaluation system must check and improve the students' competence level.

He observed that the system of affiliation had helped little in improving the quality of higher education. It had created problems, such as non-uniformity of teaching in different colleges with different value systems. The universities no longer had any control over the colleges affiliated to them, he added.

Technical education

As far as technical education was concerned, Mr. Saundatti emphasised on practical oriented examination system. There was also need to improve the process of recruitment of teachers in higher education institutions to enhance competency levels, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the VTU, K. Balaveera Reddy, said that the VTU had embarked upon major reforms both in admission and in the conduct of examinations.

He said that online examination for certain post-graduate programmes would be introduced from the next academic year.
