CHITRADURGA, DEC. 4. Chitradurga district has received a grant of Rs. 16 crores under the food-for-work programme to tackle drought in the district. Speaking to The Hindu here on Saturday, the chief executive officer, Narayanaswamy, said that the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had launched the programme in Hyderabad.
National scheme
The programme was a five-year national scheme and the district had been sanctioned Rs. 10 crores as cash component and foodgrains worth Rs. 6 crores for next 10 months, he said. The Deputy Commissioner would soon officiate the work to the nodal officer in the district, though the programme would be implemented by the zilla panchayat. The programme was being implemented in 150 districts in the country and Chitradurga, Davanagere, and Bidar, were the only three districts in the State to be covered by the programme, Mr. Narayanaswamy said. "We have not prepared an action plan this year and watershed development will be taken up next year. The success rate of watershed development works in Hosadurga taluk is encouraging. So, we want to try the same model the other parts of the district," he added. The district has also been selected for the Sum Vikasa Yojana, under which a grant of Rs. 15 crores a year would be given for next three years to take up long-term development works. The district would get an additional grant of around Rs. 60 crores under the national food-for-work programme.
