Samiti demands payment of crop insurance

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, DEC. 4. The president of the Jewargi Taluk Raita Horata Samiti and senior leader of the Janata Dal (Secular), Kedarlingaiah Hiremath, today urged the State Government and the General Insurance Company to take steps to pay the insurance amount due to the farmers for last year's rabi crop.

Mr. Hiremath told presspersons here that more than 1.20 lakh farmers in the district paid Rs. 1.10 crores as insurance premium last year.

The farmers who had taken up jowar and sunflower cultivation had lost almost 75 per cent of the normal yield due to moisture stress on the crops.

The payment of the insurance would help farmers tide over their financial problems and repay loans taken from banks and private moneylenders, he said.

Mr. Hiremath said that inquiries with the insurance company revealed that the results of last year's crop cutting experiments were being consolidated and it would take at least three months to finalise the insurance amount.

"If proper consolidation of the crop cutting experiments is done, farmers of the Gulbarga district should get at least Rs. 50 crores as insurance compensation," he said.

Mr. Hiremath said that a delegation of farmers would meet the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, in Bangalore on December 10 and discuss the delay in the payment of crop insurance to farmers.
