Pakistan against expansion of Security Council

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, DEC. 4. Pakistan is not for enlargement of the United Nations Security Council as it feels that it is against the principle of sovereign equality of nations.

The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, now on a visit to Latin America, said at a joint news conference along with his Mexican counterpart, Vicente Fox, that Pakistan and Mexico shared the same views on expansion of the Security Council.

Both backed the proposal for reforming the United Nations but Gen. Musharraf said he opposed enlarging the Security Council. The two also voiced support for the U.N. Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, under fire owing to charges of misconduct within the defunct U.N.-administered oil-for-food programme in Iraq.

"Pakistan is of the view that we need to take a very holistic view of reforming the U.N. and restructuring the Security Council," Gen. Musharraf said. "When we talk of reforming the Security Council, Pakistan is against the creation or increase in the centres of power and centres of privilege by increasing the number of permanent members in the Security Council because we feel this goes against the principle of sovereign equality of nations."

From Mexico Gen. Musharraf flew to Washington for a brief visit. He is scheduled to meet the U.S. President, George W. Bush, and hold talks on a variety of subjects. Besides asking Mr. Bush to play a pro-active role in resolution of the Palestine and Kashmir problems, Gen. Musharraf would also make a strong case for supply of F-16 aircraft.
