Congress suspends ZP president, vice-president

By Our Correspondent

CHAMARAJANAGAR, DEC. 4. The Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat president, T.V. Lakshmamma, and the vice-president, B. Makaiah, have been suspended from the primary membership of the Congress for not resigning from their posts after completing their ten-month tenure as per an internal arrangement within the party. The KPCC general secretary Prakash Rathod issued the suspension order for violation of party discipline.

According to the earlier agreement, the president and vice-president completed their ten-month tenure in October. The former district in-charge and Animal Husbandry Minister M. Mahadev had asked Ms. Lakshmamma and Mr. Makaiah to resign voluntarily. But they did not do so even after the December 1 deadline set by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

The zilla panchayat member Hemavathi Nagaiah has had her membership revoked under the Anti-Defection Act.

Ms. Nagaiah was elected to the panchayat as a Congress member. But she contested the Assembly elections held earlier this year as the BJP candidate from the Santhemaralli constituency (reserved). The District Congress Committee (DCC) had filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking that her membership be revoked.
