MYSORE, DEC. 4. The Mayor, Dakshina Murthy, was made to receive the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, from behind the barricades at Lalitha Mahal helipad here on Saturday. When the helicopter was about to land, the Mayor started walking to the helipad, but the police stopped him. When the Inspector-General of Police, Kempaiah, and the City Police Commissioner, Praveen Sood, went towards the helipad, Mr. Dakshinamurthy said: "Even I should have been allowed.'' Attired in mayoral robes, a hapless Mr. Dakshina Murthy was seen pleading with the police to let him near the helicopter. With the police turning down the request, Mr. Dakshina Murthy handed over a bouquet to Mr. Dharam Singh from behind the barricades.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and the Minister of State for Labour and Haj, Tanvir Sait. With official circles debating whether it was a protocol lapse or not, Mr. Dharam Singh told police officials that they could have allowed the Mayor to receive him properly. When Mr. Dakshina Murthy complained about the police to the Chief Minister and Mr. Sait, the Minister also told the police officers that they could have allowed the Mayor near the helicopter. "Yes, you should have allowed the Mayor,'' Mr. Dharam Singh said. The President of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat, K.C. Balaram, was also made to receive the Chief Minister behind the barricades. Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Mayor and the zilla panchayat chief should have been allowed near the helicopter. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Suresh, told the Mayor that the Chief Minister's Officer on Special Duty had instructed the police to tighten security at the helipad and limit the number of people on the helipad.
