PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC. 4. The police have seized a tempo used for illegal sand collection from river Pampa at Koothadathu kadavu, Aranmula, this afternoon. A police party led by the Circle Inspector (CI) R. Chandrashekharan Nair reportedly seized the lorry parked on the riverbed when a group of people were loading sand onto it in the presence of a grama panchayat staff member. The workers engaged in loading the sand fled at the sight of the police. The CI conducted the inspection following a tip-off received this afternoon. The River Bank Protection and Regulation of Sand Mining Act, 2001, prohibits entry of vehicles into the riverbed. The Aranmula grama panchayat had locked the `kadavu' but it was found unlocked during the police raid. Local people alleged that the panchayat authorities were abetting illegal sand collection from Pampa and that the kadavu was opened by a panchayat staff member to facilitate entry of vehicles into the riverbed for sand collection. The CI said that a case has been registered against the lorry owner, driver and against the panchayat staff member, Sebastian, for abetting the crime.
