Double delight for Kottayam

KOCHI, DEC. 4. Basketball tournaments for girls are usually closely fought affairs in Kerala. But on Saturday, Kottayam, virtually the Mount Carmel School team, drubbed Kannur 43-10 and won the under-19 girls' title in the Kerala State School Games at Thevara.

For Kottayam, it was a fine double, having won the under-17 girls' title on Friday. But there is a story behind today's lopsided final score, a rare one in the thriving schools circuit here.

"Kerala's best boys and girls are currently away playing the Schools Nationals in Kohlapur (Maharashtra). That's a big reason for the one-sided matches here," said Biju D. Theman, the Mount Carmel coach.

Kottayam was without Victoria P. Mathew, Susan Mary and K.S. Anu but had enough back up in its talented captain Shanu Chandy and Rinsa to toy with Kannur. But without its star Renjusha, Kannur caved in without a fight.

In football, Malappuram, which has a rich tradition in the sport, bagged the under-19 boys' title with a 1-0 verdict over Thiruvananthapuram.

Manavir scored the match-winner early in the second half.

Boys: Volleyball final: Kottayam bt Alappuzha 25-18, 25-17. Third place: Kozhikode bt Thrissur 25-22, 25-20. Football: Malappuram 1 (Manavir) bt Thiruvananthapuram 0. Third place: Thrissur 2 (N. Sumesh, Shafeeq) bt Kollam 0. Table tennis final placings: 1. Palakkad, 2. Thiruvananthapuram, 3. Wynad. Tennis: 1. Thiruvananthapuram, 2. Thrissur, 3. Palakkad.

Girls: Basketball final: Kottayam 43 (Rinsa 10) bt Kannur 10. Third place: Thiruvananthapuram 27 bt Alappuzha 23 (Ann 12). Volleyball final: Kannur bt Thrissur 25-13, 25-13. Third place: Ernakulam bt Kottayam 25-9, 25-19. Table tennis: 1. Thiruvananthapuram, 2. Kozhikode, 3. Thrissur. Tennis: 1. Thiruvananthapuram, 2. Thrissur, 3. Ernakulam.

Under-17 events: Boys: Football: Thrissur bt Ernakulam 7-6 (tie-breaker). Third place: Thiruvananthapuram. Handball: Palakkad bt Thiruvananthapuram 16-10. Basketball: Thiruvananthapuram bt Kottayam 69-63.

Girls: Handball: Kottayam bt Kannur 10-5.
