`Energy conservation gets little attention'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, DEC. 4 . The need for energy conservation, in the light of increasing oil prices and the fact that energy bill is a significant component of production cost in manufacturing sector, was discussed by industrialists and energy managers here today.

Organised by the Institute of Management Consultants of India (Chennai chapter), in association with M.K. Raju Consultants, the seminar felt that the impact of energy conservation measures at the national level was far from satisfactory.

Though free power was available to farmers in India, there was no online monitoring system to quantify the actual utilisation, said Mr. Raju. While the issue of curbing the oil prices was discussed in Parliament, there was no discussion on conserving energy or scaling down consumption.

Energy conservation measures involved least investment and assured returns. "It is the easiest, fastest and most effective means of increasing profits," he said. "Energy wasted today is lost forever."

The retired civil servant and chairman of the Public Expenditure Round Table, K. Venkataraman, said industries must ensure participation by workers who had ideas, which executives and managers might not have.
