CHENNAI, DEC. 4. Members of the Tamilnadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peravai will observe a one-day token fast in the city on December 9 to protest against "police action" against traders dealing in old bottles at the "instance" of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC). Talking to newsmen here today, the Peravai president, T. Vellaiyan, said the traders had been doing business for the last three decades and that about 1.5 lakh workers were engaged in the trade in Chennai alone. Wholesale traders, who used to procure empty liquor bottles from various sources, sold them back to distillery units for repacking. The Corporation, with the help of the police, seized bottles worth several lakhs from bottle merchants in the last one week, claiming that all used bottles were its property. When the Peravai office-bearers questioned the police action, cases were foisted on them.
