THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 4. Nearly 400 residents of Vayyamoola today prevented a move by the Revenue officials to acquire land for the development of the airport. According to the police, the protestors were demanding an increase in the proposed compensation amount for the land from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 80,000. However, the members of the Joint Action Council for Airport Development who were among the protestors alleged that the officials had backtracked on their promise to hold discussions with the residents before acquiring the land. A joint meeting with the residents, the District Collector and the Minister concerned has now been scheduled for December 10. Twelve persons who were arrested by the police in connection with the protest were later released.
