Actor Jose Pellissery dead

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, DEC. 5. Theatre and film actor Jose Pellissery died at a private hospital in Chalakudy, near here, on Sunday following a heart attack. He was 54.

According to his family, the actor fell unconscious this morning and was rushed to the hospital.

The end came around 11-30 a.m.

Pellissery started his career acting in amateur productions and plays with Biblical themes. He became popular after he played important roles in nearly 14 plays, produced by Chalakudy Sarathy Theatres and directed by the well-known actor Thilakan. The plays included `Alakal,' `Indhanam,' `Five Star Hospital,' `Fassahu,' `Adisankaran Janicha Naattil,' `Mochanam Nale' and `Chamayam.' `Alakal' was first directed by J.C. Kuttikad and an abridged version was later brought out by Thilakan. Pellissery was also a partner of the theatre company.

He won the State Award for the Best Actor for his performance in `Fassahu.'

"He was an actor of rare emotional depth, able to thrill theatre and cinema audiences alike,'' recalled Thilakan. "I first worked with him in 1982 and was impressed by his talent. The plays we did together are an enduring evidence of his histrionic power and gift.''

Pellissery played supporting roles in about 100 films, including `Aadharam,' `Nadodikattu,' `Akashadoothu' and `Ghazal'. The tele-serials in which he appeared included `Kayamkulam Kochunni,' `Chitta' and `Meghanidhi'.

"Malayalam cinema did not exploit Pellissery's talent,'' rued Thilakan.

Babu Pisharody, who directed Pellissery on `Ratholsavam,' remembered the actor as "simple and easy-to-work-with.''

"He was a decent man,'' said actor Edavela Babu. "He refused to play the celebrity game and defied filmdom's stereotypes for actors.''

Pellissery is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
