Five missing after mob violence
By Our Special Correspondent
KOLKATA,
DEC. 5.
Five persons are missing after an armed mob, suspected to be supporters of naxalite groups, blew up a forest guest house, torched a lorry and an earth-excavator and destroyed hutments of labourers near Kokrajhar in the Belpahari area of West Midnapore district last night.
It is suspected that those missing could be labourers engaged by the Public Works Department for laying a road. A massive search is on by the police and paramilitary forces in the area, large parts of which are dense forest, the District Magistrate, Chandan Sinha, told The Hindu over telephone from Midnapore.
He said that more than 100 armed persons stormed the area late in the evening and started beating up people and setting properties on fire. The 12.5 km-long road being laid to link Odolchoya with Kokrajhar is part of a programme to develop, with Central funds, the region.
